Our Annual Pit Firing - Learning, Creativity & Community ⭐
Another Wonderful Pit Firing Adventure 🔥
There's something a little bit magical about pit firing.
After weeks of preparing our pieces, experimenting with terra sigillata, burnishing and gathering natural materials, our members headed to Randall Sinnamon's beautiful bush property once again for our annual pit firing.
For many, it was their first experience with pit firing. Others were keen to build on what they'd learnt in previous years, trying different textures, colourants and wrapping techniques to see what unique effects the fire would create. That's one of the joys of pit firing - no two pieces are ever the same.
Over two visits, we carefully loaded the pit, waited patiently while nature and fire worked their magic, then returned a week later to uncover the results. There were plenty of smoky greys, rich earthy tones, flashes of colour and lots of excited conversations as everyone discovered how their pieces had transformed.
Of course, not everything goes exactly to plan, and that's part of the learning too. Every pit firing teaches us something new and gives us more ideas to try next time.
A huge thank you to Randall Sinnamon for once again welcoming our group onto his incredible property, generously sharing his knowledge and giving us a tour of both his unique bushland and inspiring artwork. We also want to thank Kevin for helping throughout the firing and unpacking days. Having experienced artists willing to share their time and knowledge makes these opportunities so special.
It wasn't just about the pottery either. We enjoyed morning tea together, kept warm around the fire, got our hands dirty brushing charcoal from our pots, and shared plenty of laughs while carefully cleaning our pieces before taking them home for the final wash and polish.
Days like these remind us what Bay & Basin Bush Potters is all about - connecting, creating and building community. Learning together, encouraging each other to experiment, and celebrating every unique result.
We can't wait to see where everyone's creativity takes them next year. 🤍
